Job Description


As an engineer in the Mechanical Engineering Division, you will be exposed to a broad range of technical challenges where you can apply your knowledge as well as learn new skills while being involved with solving problems of national interest.  As the focal point at Client for hardware development and fabrication, the staff within the Mechanical Engineering & System Packaging Division is responsible for supporting technical solutions across the Lab, connecting us to defense, space, energy, and biomechanical areas.  Members of the division propose, design, analyze and build a variety of electro-mechanical hardware, ranging from precision instruments and micro-scale sensors, to robots and components for large, high-reliability systems.
The technical responsibilities will vary depending on project needs, however example project topics include:

¿    Ruggedized miniature electro-mechanical systems
¿    Hypersonic and space-going structures and avionics
¿    Robotics and autonomous systems
¿    Bio-compatible mechanical systems

The candidate may perform a range of tasks supporting the entire design, analysis, prototyping, and testing cycle. In addition, the candidate will participate on cross-functional teams with engineers from other disciplines, contribute to proposal efforts, clearly communicate design ideas and status updates to internal teams, and potentially meet with (and present to) external customers.

Tasks depend on program priorities, however desired skills include:

¿    Analytical modeling and finite element analysis of complex electro-mechanical systems from a structural survivability standpoint, including static, shock, and vibration environments
¿    Analytical modeling and finite element analysis of complex electro-mechanical systems from a thermal standpoint, including steady-state and transient analysis 
¿    Ability to effectively communicate results to both expert and non-expert team members and management
¿    Ability to provide insight and suggest design modifications based on analysis outcomes
¿    Designing in 3D CAD software
¿    Familiarity with CFD analysis in support of thermal flow analysis and aerodynamic performance 
¿    Familiarity with considerations for manufacturability, proper drawing creation, and tolerancing
¿    Fabrication and assembly of prototypes and proof-of-concept models


Master or Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field such as mechanical engineering, materials science, manufacturing engineering, etc.  Relevant project or work experience (Bachelors + 10 years of experience, Masters + 7 years of experience, minimum)  is required with demonstrated success in delivering high-quality results and insights.

¿    Current US Secret or Top Secret clearance is required.

Depending on the specific project assignment, the following skills are expected, though applicants are not required to have every skill listed:

¿    Experience with Finite Element Analysis packages, specifically ANSYS
¿    Experience with 3D CAD packages, specifically SolidWorks or Creo
¿    Familiarity with machine shop tools and processes
¿    Familiarity with 3D printing capabilities
¿    Familiarity of printed circuit board design a plus
¿    Familiarity with Electronics and Software prototyping a plus
¿    Microsoft products
