Systems Engineer

Contract 40 hours weekly, 3+ years

Active Top Secret clearance is required due to the nature of the work being performed

-The position is at least 75% onsite; with some remote flexibility. Candidate must be local to the Lexington MA area for the start of the project.

-25% travel may come up later in the project for field site testing or supporting sponsor meetings (domestic travel)

Description:
Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, evaluates alternatives including cost and risk, supportability and analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.

The Systems Engineering Group develops space, airborne, and terrestrial prototypes with innovative solutions to challenging national security problems. Our teams handle most of the large prototype systems developed by the Laboratory, including space payloads and satellites for sensing and communication, and airborne and ground-based systems. Example projects include satellite sensors, space-based and ground-based laser communications systems, airborne laser radar, imaging systems on both manned and unmanned aircraft, and small satellites.

Our engineers ensure that all the components of a system work together to achieve the desired results. We do systems engineering across the complete project life-cycle, from trade studies, architecture development, requirements development and flow down to subsystems, hardware and software co-design, risk reduction testing, assembly, integration, and test, with demonstration and initial operations. Our staff have broad expertise across multiple scientific and engineering disciplines including astrophysics, aerospace, mechanical, optical, electrical, avionics and software engineering.

We are seeking a systems engineer to play a key role in the Verification and Validation (V&V) of a novel space-based system. While the exact role will depend on the experience and skills of the successful candidate, it will include some combination of determining how requirements will be verified, planning and executing the V&V phase of the program and organizing and reporting the results. This will involve close collaboration with the other members of the team including the lead systems engineers and the unit leads for the various subsystems.

Support test execution during Thermal Vacuum (TVAC) and other environmental testing, including some evening, night, and weekend test shifts. It is preferred that this candidate will be willing to perform some of the off hours testing when it comes up in the test cycle.

Required experience:
-Systems Engineering experience
-Environmental testing experience (for example: TVAC, vibration, shock, etc)
-Systems Integration experience
-Looking for a candidate with either 1+ years of experience post graduate or equivalent internships/co-op etc. They should have experience above classroom work.
