Systems Engineer

Contract 3 Year Assignment 40 Hours weekly, Fully on site at White Sands NM

Client's Advanced Sensors & Techniques Group (G92) operates ground based electro-optical and radio telescopes. These systems are located at the Experimental Test System (ETS) and Atom peak, located on White Sands Missile Range near Socorro, New Mexico. The group develops advanced electro-optical systems and techniques for optical space surveillance.

The ETS seeks a system engineer that will maintain and modernize observatory systems, operate telescopes and perform astronomical observations as directed by ETS staff. Candidate must be able to work without close supervision and to make scientific and technical decisions.

Due to the nature of field site work, the candidate is required to have many skills outside of typical system engineering:
• Observing Support: Operating/monitoring telescopes for various missions. This includes configuring sensors for specific tracking requests.
• Telescope/Dome Maintenance: Coordinates preventative maintenance on all telescope and dome systems on site.
• Computer System Configuration/Deployment: Responsible for designing and configuring computer systems for various tasks. These tasks include personal computing, weather monitoring, camera control, and other system critical machines. Linux and Windows deployment.
• Computer System Administration: Responsible for system administration for all computers at site. Among these computers are Linux/Windows data servers, Linux/Windows mission critical systems, Windows desktop PCs, and other various Windows machines that are critical to operations.
• Hardware Deployment: Specifying and implementing hardware to perform specific tasks. This includes hardware such as computer boards, Ethernet devices, media converters, weather instrumentation, serial devices, etc.
• Fabrication: Responsible for design and fabrication of systems to be used with telescope optics systems. Machine shop experience as well as welding and braising.

• Aptitude in optics, mechanics, electronics, mechanisms, computers and building automation.
• Skills in reading drawings, specifications and manuals.
• Knowledge of welding theory and principles, machine tools and their various aspects that include repair and maintenance.
• Expertise in set up and operation of machine tools such as a lathe, milling, drill press, band saw, roll bending, threading machine, sheet metal bending, abrasive blasting, powder coating and handheld power tools.
• Experience with arc, oxyfuel gas, resistance, TIG and MIG welding, plasma torch and oxy-fuel cutting, soldering and brazing.
• Physically capable of working at altitudes of 8000 feet above sea level.
• Perform tasks on and around the telescope mount, optics and dome which includes working in high and confined places.
• Knowledge of astronomical techniques and 3 or more years of experience with astronomical observing and instrumentation. Specific coursework in Astronomy a plus.
• Proficiency with MS Windows 7, MS Office, Linux Redhat 5
• Work with outside contracted maintenance service providers

• Hardware Deployment: Specifying and implementing hardware to perform specific tasks. This includes hardware such as computer boards, Ethernet devices, media converters, weather instrumentation, serial devices, etc.
